[ It sure is unnerving to be on the other side, and to see Yuji so pressed at him. Is this the sort of face he makes when he storms into the medical bay looking for Yuji? No, he doesn't think he's ever this gentle about it. Megumi would have hit the other boy on the head right away, not dropped a blanket on him and tapped him lightly in admonishment.
Megumi is of weaker constituency than Yuji, so he takes longer to recover from the surgery, his muscles still fatigued and aching and the pain of it still fresh on his mind. He can push away the latter, of course, but the former is confining him mostly in bed. Though he's a hypocrite for doing this after giving the other boy so much grief about it, he's been considering it for a while now. It isn't fair that only Yuji has to suffer for the sake of everyone else. It just made sense when he though about it. So far, it doesn't look like anyone's surgery was botched, so the damned cat does deliver as asked, even if they should really stock up on more painkillers.
Stupid cat.
Being in the sick bay is lonely and miserable, so he just wanted some company. ] That was you scolding me, huh?
I'm not gonna hit you hard when you're already in pain.
[ Megumi doesn't have the same kind of tolerance that Yuji does, and he knows it. It's going to have been tough for him without the anaesthetics, and Yuji can appreciate it - he can empathise. He's been there, in a literal sense, and he sighs as he reaches out immediately to take his friend's hand.
At least he can do something to help with the pain of it, right? He can help him heal, just a little bit.
Sighing, he tilts his head, watching his friend with a shake of his head. ]
[ When his hand is taken, he can feel a warmth wash over him immediately, easing some of the lingering pain. It brings some relief. He hopes that he'll be able to do this for the other boy too, in the future. Yuji might have RCT, but takes energy as well to use, so even he's going to need healing at some point. ]
I'm just fine. [ Megumi shifts, groaning slightly as he sits up in the bed. ] There's something that's been bothering me though.
[ Sliding his hand out of Yuji's, he winces the moment he's cut off from the healing, but pushes through to show him what he wants to show him. Megumi clasps his hands together, summoning the Divine Dog.
After the dog emerges from the shadow, it starts to growl and snarl at the sorcerer, acting like it doesn't even know him. ]
[ The problem is going to be getting Yuji to admit that he needs that extra help - but he's working on it. He's getting better at admitting he needs help, that he needs support, in a way he might never have been able to at home. Back there, he's essentially on his own now, everyone else taken from him. ]
What...? [ The dog appears and growls, and Yuji frowns, standing up and stepping over and around. If he can calm the dog down, maybe it'll settle a little, but this is super weird. Aren't they really protective over Megumi normally...? That's...
Frowning, he turns back to his friend. ]
Do you think it's a side effect of the nanobots? This is super strange.
[ The Divine Dog continues to growl and snarl, edging closer and like it could charge at them at any minute. Megumi glances at it, the look in his eyes clearly dismayed. The pain was one thing, but seeing his dog not recognise him is a different kind of pain. It's the same as having an old friend suddenly decide they hate him. ]
Cursed techniques reside in the brain. It's possible that the nanobots have messed with mine. I'm hoping it's not permanent ...
[ How sad would that be? He can see the other boy squaring up to intervene, and he doesn't want a pointless fight to break out, so he releases the technique and lets the wolf sink back into the shadow ]
Yeah, I think it's temporary. Other people I've talked to had weird side effects, like March-san, and they got better after a while.
[ Yuji reaches out to pet the dog before it disappears, and then he sighs, trailing his way back around to Megumi. This time, he sits himself on the bed beside his friend, thinking that Megumi probably needs the comfort of closeness more than Yuji sitting in the chair.
Reaching out, he offers his hand again, head tilted. ]
[ That's actually relieving to hear, and what he needs to hear right now because the anxiety was running circles around his brain. Megumi lets out a sigh, shifting closer to the other boy so their shoulders are touching. He gradually starts to drop his weight to the side, leaning against Yuji's shoulder as a blush settles on his face. He feels guilty whenever he does this, since he's pretty certain the other boy is dating another, but it's difficult to stop himself when it feels so nice. There's no one he's let himself be this affectionate around yet. ]
Alright. For now, I just want to get back to my room.
[ Yuji squeezes his hand gently. For him, Megumi is the most important person in his world right now, no matter what else happens. His whole reason for fighting as hard as he is remains for the sole purpose of making sure Megumi is safe, that he saves him, that he frees him from Sukuna. Nothing else could possibly compare, even if he distracts himself with the missions here.
[ Megumi will always have that ominous feeling in regard to their future, but the other boy compartmentalizes things so well it's easy to forget what's happening. Or maybe, it's just easier not to think about it, when they can live out a fairly normal life in this place and not struggle in vain.
Right now, all he wants is to be away from this cold and clinical environment and back in his warm bed. Being carried around is embarrassing, but he doesn't think he can walk the whole way, so he doesn't really have a choice in this.
It's still embarrassing, though. He blushes slightly, turning away. ]
[ Yuji shifts to get himself out of the bed, and then he's taking the blanket he brought and wrapping it around his friend. It's not that difficult to lift him up and into his arms - it's not as if Megumi weighs anywhere near as much as a car does, so it's simple to draw him close against his body and let him rest there, princess style.
It also doesn't embarrass him: he doesn't care. This is his best friend.
Starting to head out towards the door, Yuji hums softly. ]
We'll go back to your room and I'll stay until you feel better.
[ As embarrassing as it was to be bridal carried in public, Megumi would be lying if he claimed to not enjoy it; the genuine consideration and care that went into this simple act. Wrapping him up so he's not cold. Scooping him with such a gentle touch. He can settle with being best friends for as long as their probably short lives and nothing more, but he thinks it'll be hard to stop feeling the way he does - that outpouring of affection when Yuji shows him kindness.
Megumi leans against the other boy's chest, snuggling up close and wrapping his arms around his neck. He's lifted too easily, light for a boy his age, and puts up no fuss. A blush settles on his face because it is embarrassing still. ]
[ Yuji doesn't hesitate as he walks through the base, unconcerned about the weight in his arms. He is careful to try and dodge the main hallways and corridors, to step around where there might be people, until they get back to Megumi's room and they slip in through the door. It's familiar - he's been here enough - and he can walk over to the bed without considering it, settling Megumi down and tucking him in gently. ]
One second, kay?
[ He reaches out to settle the pillows around Megumi, making sure he's comfortable, before he reaches to tug off the hoodie he's wearing and shift to climb into bed beside his friend, sliding up beside him and smiling softly. ]
[ The other boy seems to read him like a book. This is what he would like today. The surgery was rough, and it's sad to remember that if he summons his shikigami right now, they might be hostile toward him. What he really needs is some comfort and reassurance, and this boy was always ready to give it to him.
They've done this a few times before, and each time, Megumi gets more comfortable with it. He doesn't know if it's a normal thing for friends, since he's sharing the bed with his very first friend, but it isn't like doing this is going to hurt anyone. ]
We can just order it. [ A drone would drop it off to them with no fuss. It's better than lying around as he waits for the other boy to come back. Sliding closer, Megumi wraps his arms around Yuji's waist, resting his head against his shoulder.
Unrelated to anything, that firefighter calendar is still on his wall with the month at March, so ... ]
[ Yuji has been there - he'd had the surgery months ago, and it had been a painful and difficult experience, but it was one that he had done alone. He was one of the first to get the upgrade as far as he knew, so he wasn't sure how to do anything once it was all done with, just settling down with a cat purring on his lap and hoping that he could be useful more in the future. That's the same reason Megumi got it, too, isn't it?
The desire to be useful, to fight better, to be strong enough... Maybe they share that.
Sinking into Megumi, he sighs softly, closing his eyes and letting an arm wrap around him. Physical touch will help Megumi feel better, and he can't deny that it feels good, having his best friend this close, knowing that Megumi is taken care of, that he's safe, that he's not going to get hurt. Not while Yuji is around.
[ This is so nice. He wishes he could be here with his best friend forever, away from the despair and hopelessness of the world they come from. Almost everyone he cares about is here, and the other boy seems to happy - more open with how he feels. There was still danger, but Sukuna did not exist, so there was at least no certainty that Yuji will die, or that he'll have an incentive to kill himself. It would be nice to live here forever, but Megumi knows that at some point, he needs to go back. He has to save Tsumiki after all.
But for now, it's fine. It's okay to be happy and live in the moment. That's what he's learned from the people he's met here. ]
Well, if that's on the table ... [ Does it trouble the other boy? No. He offered, so clearly he's willing. Megumi can attempt to help depending on how he feels walking around. ] Make me those ginger meatballs again.
[ Yuji hums softly, absently tucking more blankets around Megumi as he makes himself comfortable. He knows he's getting to be a bit big in spaces now, muscle dense and hard, so he's trying to make himself as small as possible so he doesn't take up too much room: he wants to make sure his friend is comfortable and healing, not feeling awkward and out of place.
He leans in, though, resting his forehead on Megumi's shoulder as he breathes out a soft noise. ]
Sure. You really liked those? [ He sounds pleased. ] Maybe some rice, and some pepper... You should have extra meat, since you're recovering.
That sounds good. [ He'll let the other boy spoil him, since he seems to want to. They could start making some dinner, but he wants to sink into this embrace for just a little longer. It feels comfortable, warm and safe, like he belongs here and he doesn't want to ever break apart.
Something else comes to mind, though. Something Denji had said to him a few weeks prior, at the hot springs. He's come to an acceptance that how he feels about this boy goes beyond mere friendship, and Denji had encouraged him to tell him how he feels, even if it's likely that the other boy did not feel the same way. If only so Megumi could get some closure, so he could move on and be normal friends.
He hates talking about his inner feelings, but this has gotten him twisted up for close to two months. Maybe Denji is right and this is what he should be doing. Megumi lets out a sigh, then pulls away slightly if only so they can look at each other. His voice goes quieter, and there's a blush that settles on his cheeks now. ]
